The Scuola di San Rocco was formed in 1478 and less than a decade later its prestige was enhanced to the status of Scuola Grande when the relics of San Rocco (Saint Roch) were transferred into its care. The building was begun by Pietro Bon in 1517, but the architect was dismissed in 1524 after a major disagreement with the scuola. The project was then entrusted to Antonio Abbondi, better known as Lo Scarpagnino, who worked on the building until his death, in 1549. The beautiful façade is generally regarded to be his masterpiece.
Between 1564 and 1588, the Venetian painter Jacopo Robusti, better known as Tintoretto, decorated the interior of the Scuola with one of the most important cycles of painting in Italian art. The beautiful and intricately carved wooden panels and allegorical figures, which line the side walls of the Sala Superiore, are the work of Francesco Pianta the Younger (1630-90). |
