Coffee House
At one end of the Giardini Reali stands the charming neo-classical Coffee House (1815-17), the work of Lorenzo Santi.
The Coffee House was built for the use of the Austrian vice-regent and his court and soon nicknamed by the Venetians as the "ninnolo dei fanciulli" (toy for the boys). It later became the seat of the Societa Canottieri Bucintoro, the oldest and most prestigious boating club in the city. The Giardini Reali, which replaced some ancient granaries, were created at the beginning of the 19th century during the occupation of Venice by the forces of Napoleon Bonaparte. They are named after the erstwhile Palazzo Reale, which was located in the Procuratie Nuove. |
