Scuola degli Albanesi
The Scuola degli Albanesi was established by the expatriate Albanian community between 1497-1502.
In 1504 the scuola commissioned Vittore Carpaccio to paint a series of paintings on the life of the Virgin Mary. The cycle is now dispersed in museums in Venice, Milan and Bergamo. The façade is decorated with four bas-reliefs, the work of Giovanni Zorzi (c. 1530). The upper relief illustrates the Turkish siege of the Albanian town of Scutari, the lower reliefs depict the scuola's patron saints (St. Gall, Virgin Mary, St. Maurice). The lintel above the door is carved with an inscription: SCOLA Sta MARIA SAN GALLO DI ALBANESI. In 1780 the Scuola degli Albanesi was suppressed and its premises taken over by the Scuola dei Pistori (Bakers). |
