The Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, which was once the home of Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979), American heiress, socialite and art collector, houses her prestigious collection of modern art.
The architect of the Palazzo Venier, which lies on the Grand Canal, was Lorenzo Boschetti. Work began in 1749, but the building never progressed beyond the first storey, which is why it is also known as the Palazzo Non-Finito. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection houses a very impressive selection of modern art, including works by most of the major artists of the twentieth century, including The Robing of the Bride by Peggy Guggenheim's erstwhile husband, Max Ernst. Peggy Guggenheim died in 1979, aged eighty-one, and her ashes are buried in the garden of the palazzo next to those of her fourteen 'beloved babies' (Lhasa Apsos). |
