San Teodoro
The church of San Teodoro was built in the Renaissance style, between 1486 and 1490, by Maestro Domenico to a design by Giorgio Spavento. The fine portal was carved by Sebastiano da Lugano and Matteo da Valle. In 1491 the façade was frescoed by Tommaso di Giorgio.
This is what Lorenzetti has to say about the church: "...a Renaissance building erected by Giorgio Spavento (end of the XV cent.), with a fine doorway ornamented with a mosaic, St. Theodore brought here and adapted from the demolished church of S. Maria Nova; the façade was at one time all covered with frescoes....Dedicated first to St. Theodore....it was later appointed as the seat of the Holy Office or Holy Inquisition." |
