Scala del Bovolo
The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo was designed and built in its current form in the 15th century by the architect Giovanni Candi, as one of the many homes of the wealthy Contarini family.
Giorgio Spavento is believed to have been responsible for the addition of the grand helical staircase, the scala del bovolo, on the exterior in 1499. Bovolo is the Venetian word for snail. External staircases were common in Venetian houses of the 14th and 15th centuries, but, even at the time it was built, the staircase of the Palazzo Contarini was unusual in both its size and form. The staircase tower is connected to the main building via a side addition, which adds four loggias to the overall structure. |
