Procuratie Nuove
The building, which lies along the south side of the Piazza San Marco is the Procuratie Nuove and was designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548-1616), Palladio's most famous pupil. Work began in 1582, but ground to a halt in 1586, having reached the tenth arch (counting from the end nearest the campanile). The project was finished circa 1640 by Scamozzi's own pupil, Baldassare Longhena.
Under Napoleonic rule (1805-14) the Procuratie Nuove was transformed into the official, royal residence of the governor and linked to the Procuratie Nuovissime (Ala Napoleonica), which had been built at the west end of the piazza. In 1920 the building became the property of the state and the rooms were used as part of the Museo Correr. |
