Ca' da Mosto
Map.
The 13th century Ca' da Mosto, which is situated on the Grand Canal, is a good example of the Veneto-Byzantine style.
Only three arches remain, at water level, of its original arcade. The windows of the first floor still retain their stilted arches. The whole of this floor is faced with marble, into which are set a number of medieval paterae. The top two floors do not belong to the original palace, but were added at a much later date. The Ca' da Mosto was the birthplace of the explorer Alvise da Mosto (1432-88), who discovered the Cape Verde Islands. In 1661 the palazzo was turned into the Albergo del Leon Bianco, which soon became one of the most famous hotels in Venice |
