Santi Apostoli
Map.
A church dedicated to the holy apostles has stood on this site since the 7th century, but Santi Apostoli has been rebuilt and modernised several times over the centuries.
The interior of Santi Apostoli comprises an exceptionally wide and aisle-less nave, which is lined with altars. The chancel has a chapel on each side. Half along the right side of the nave stands the elegant, late 15th century Corner Chapel, which is thought to be the work of Mauro Codussi. Over the altar hangs Tiepolo's painting of The Communion of Saint Lucy (1748). On the right wall is the tomb of Marco Corner, the father of Caterina Cornaro (Queen of Cyprus), possibly the work of Tullio Lombardo. The campanile of Santi Apostoli, which is one of the prominent landmarks on the Venetian skyline, was rebuilt in 1672. The elegant belfry was added in 1710 by Andrea Tirali. |
