San Giorgio dei Greci
Map.
The church of San Giorgio dei Greci was built, to a design by Sante Lombardo, between 1536 and 1561. Its interior is richly embellished and decorated with paintings in the Byzantine style. The precariously leaning campanile was added between 1587 and 1592, the work of Bernardo Ongarin.
The Greek colony in Venice was substantially enlarged after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. In 1493 a Greek confraternity was founded under the protection of Saint Nicolas of Myra. The Museum of Icons is housed in the former Scuola di San Nicolo dei Greci, a 17th century building, which stands to the north of the church, the work of Baldassare Longhena. |
