S. Girolamo
The church of San Girolamo, which is located in the sestier di Canaregio, was founded at the end of the 14th century. In the 18th century it was totally destroyed by fire and rebuilt to a design by Domenico Rossi. In 1807 the church and its convent were suppressed and adapted to other uses. Between 1840 and 1855 San Girolamo became a steam-mill and a chimney was fitted into its campanile (later destroyed).
A century later, in 1952, San Girolamo was reopened to the public as a church, but one without its original fixtures and fittings. |
