The Palazzo Fortuny, which is also known as the Palazzo Pesaro degli Orfei, was originally built for the Pesaro family in the 15th century.
At the beginning of the 20th century the palace was acquired by the Spanish artist, Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (1871-1949), who specialised in painting for the stage and in fabric design. The Late Gothic palace provided the perfect setting for Fortuny to receive his wealthy and illustrious clients which included actresses, dancers and American heiresses. Fortuny's designs were part of the Jugendstil and Art Deco movements and consisted of soft, flowing garments. Since 1956 the palazzo has housed the Museo Fortuny, a collection of Mariano's fabrics, stage backdrops and paintings. |
