San Vidal
Map.
A church was first erected on this site in 1084 and dedicated to San Vitale, or San Vidal in Venetian. It was reconstructed in the late 17th century to designs by Antonio Gaspari.
The façade was added later by Andrea Tirali (1734-7) and sports statues of Doge Carlo Contarini (1655-56), who funded the project, his wife, and Teodor Tessari, the parish priest (piovan). Tessari was given the honour of a statue, on account of his exertions to have the church rebuilt. The highlight of San Vidal is Carpaccio's painting of the eponymous saint on horseback (1514), which adorns the high altar. The church is open all day as it is now used as a venue for classical music concerts. |
