Pescheria di Rialto
The Pescheria di Rialto, Venice's famous fish market, was first established in 1332, but at a site much nearer the Ponte di Rialto. It moved to its present site in 1459.
The first permanent structure only dates back to 1884 when a cast-iron and glass building was erected. The structure was so hated by the locals that it was soon replaced by the two neo-Gothic market halls we see today, which were created by the architect Domenico Ruspoli and the sculptor Cesare Laurenti and built between 1902 and 1907. A bronze statue of Saint Peter, the work of Laurenti, stands at one corner of the market, overlooking the Grand Canal. |
