Palazzo dei Camerlenghi
Map.
The Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, which stands at the foot of the Ponte di Rialto, was once the seat of the Lords of the Exchequer.
Between 1523 and 1525, a complex of ancient buildings was consolidated, modernised and given a Renaissance façade by Guglielmo dei Grigi. The ground floor of the palazzo was used as a prison, hence the name of the fondamenta - Fondamenta dei Prigioni. The Palazzo dei Cammerlenghi is extremely unusual in that it is free-standing. The pilasters on the south side of the building are decorated with a series of curious capitals. |
