San Rocco
Open: 09.30-17.30.
The church of San Rocco, which houses the remains of the eponymous saint, was built to a design by Bartolomeo Bon between 1489 and 1494. The church was almost (the apse and dome were retained) entirely rebuilt by Giovanni Scalfarotto in the early 18th century. The façade (1765-71), which is the work of Bernadino Maccaruzzi, echoes the classical motifs of the neighbouring Scuola Grande di San Rocco. The statues are by Giovanni Morlaiter, Giovanni Marchiori, Antonio Gai and Giuseppe Bernardi.
The interior comprises an aisle-less nave and an apse, which is flanked by two chapels. In the presbytery hang four large paintings by Tintoretto, which depict the miracles of Saint Roch, a saint traditionally invoked against outbreaks of the plague. Tintoretto also painted the doors of the original organ, which can be seen above the entrance to the church. The paintings depict the Annunciation and Saint Roch. The two splendid Rococo sculptures of David and Saint Cecilia (1743), which can be found just inside the door, are by Giovanni Marchiori. At the side of the church, facing the Scuola, the old portal and the rose window, which belonged to the original 15th century building, can still be seen. |
