San Luca
Records show that a church dedicated to Saint Luke has existed on the site since at least 1072.
The first church to be erected was funded by the Dandolo and Pizzamano families, but this was destroyed by fire in 1167. It was duly rebuilt and later enlarged (1442). It was rebuilt again in the 16th century. In 1827 part of the façade collapsed and the church underwent yet another reconstruction. In 1556 the church of San Luca became the final resting place of the satirist, poet and part-time pornographer, Pietro Aretino (b. 1492). Unfortunately, the location of his burial place was lost during the last phase of building work. Aretino, who came to be known as the 'scourge of princes', moved to Venice in 1527 and lived in the parish of San Luca for the final few years of his life. |
