Santissimo Nome di Gesù
Santissimo Nome di Gesù was erected between 1815 and 1834, during the Austrian occupation of the city. The church dates back to a time when it was more common in Venice to destroy sacred buildings than to construct them.
The church was designed in the neo-classical style by Giannantonio Selva and completed by his pupil, Antonio Diedo. Some of the materials used during its construction were recycled from the church of San Geminiano in the Piazza San Marco, which had just been demolished. The interior comprises a nave, vaulted in stone, without aisles. The nave is separated from the sanctuary by two huge columns. |
