Santa Maria della Presentazione
The church of Santa Maria della Presentazione, more commonly known as the Chiesa delle Zitelle (1582-86), was probably designed by Palladio (1508-80), but not built until after his death. The work was directed by Jacopo Bozzetto. The design of the brightly-lit church takes the form of a barrel-vaulted vestibule, beyond which lies the square nave surmounted by a large dome.
The buildings to either side of the church once belonged to a hospice, which was founded in 1561 by Benedetto Palmi, a Jesuit priest, to house and educate poor young girls (zitelle). |
