Scuola di San Nicolo dei Greci
Castello, 3412.
The Scuola di San Nicolo dei Greci was designed by Baldassare Longhena, who was appointed proto to the Greek community in 1678 and built in the same year.
There had been a Greek community in Venice since the 13th century, but its size increased dramatically in the second half of the 15th century and throughout the 16th century following the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the expansion of the Ottomans in eastern Europe. Since 1959, the Scuola di San Nicolo dei Greci has housed a Museum of Icons. It is located in a room which was once used by the scuola as a hospital. |
