Palazzo della Zecca
The Palazzo della Zecca was designed by Jacopo Sansovino and built between 1537 and 1545 to replace the old mint (which can be seen in the Barbari map) of the Venetian state.
The fortress-like design of the palazzo reflects the function of the building, to mint and store valuable coins. Sansovino only designed a two-storey building; the third storey was added by another hand between 1558 and 1566. Today, the palazzo houses part of the Biblioteca Marciana. |
