The church of Santa Maria del Rosario is more commonly known as I Gesuati and should not be confused with I Gesuiti, the Jesuit's church, which is situated on the other side of the city. The Order of the Poor Jesuates was established in 1360, almost 200 years before the Society of Jesus (1540).
At the beginning of the 16th century the order set up a monastery on the Zattere dedicated to St Jerome. In 1688 the Order was dissolved and the monastery was taken over by the Dominicans, who built the church of Santa Maria del Rosario. The architect was Giorgio Massari and the church was built between 1726 and 1735. Soon after it was consecrated, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo began work on decorating the ceiling. The central painting depicts the Institution of the Rosary. |
