San Marcuola
The church of San Marcuola, which sits on the Grand Canal, is dedicated to two saints, Hermagoras and Fortunatus. Marcuola is a contraction of Ermacora in Venetian dialect. The church was built by Giorgio Massari between 1728 and 1736, but the façade was never finished.
The interior is made up of a nave (whose width exceeds its length) without aisles and a chancel. The church's two pulpits are placed, somewhat unusually, over the side entrances. San Marcuola is home to an early work by Tintoretto. His painting of The Last Supper hangs on the left wall of the chancel. The altarpieces in the nave are all decorated with statues rather than paintings, the work of Gian Maria Morleiter and his assistants. |
