San Zaninovo
San Zaninovo is Venetian for San Giovanni in Oleo. Although a church dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist has stood on this site since the 10th century, the present building only dates back to the middle of the 18th century and is the work of Matteo Lucchesi.
The interior is a simple nave with four chapels, two on each side. The square presbytery is covered by a barrel-vaulted ceiling. The stone façade was never finished. The great Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi, who was also a priest, celebrated his first (and almost his last) mass in this church. |
