Gallerie dell'Accademia
The Gallerie dell'Accademia houses a fine collection of Venetian paintings from the 14th to the 18th century. The galleries occupy buildings which once belonged to the church and monastery of Santa Maria della Misericordia and the Scuola Grande della Carità.
The neo-classical façade was added in the 19th century when the complex was adapted to receive the Accademia di Belle Arti (Academy of Fine Arts). The Academy had been founded in the middle of the 18th century; its first president was Giambattista Piazzetta. The collection of the Gallerie dell'Accademia originally comprised work by academicians. This was substantially enriched with pictures from churches and monasteries suppressed by Napoleon and with numerous bequests from private collections. |
