Doge Francesco Morosini
Francesco Morosini (1619 -1694) was the doge of Venice from 1688 to 1694. Morosini's claim to fame lies in his military victories in the Peloponnese, which earned him the title Peloponnesiacus. In 1685, at the outbreak of the Morean War, Morosini took command of a fleet against the Ottomans and over the next few years he recaptured most of the Peloponnese peninsula, with the help of Otto Wilhelm Königsmarck.
Francesco Morosini was the first Venetian citizen to have a bronze bust of himself placed in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio (in the Palazzo Ducale), while he was still living. The bust bears the inscription FRANCISCO MAVROCENO PELOPONNESIACO ADHVC VIVENTE SENATVS. |
