Mausoleum of Doge Giovanni Pesaro
The Mausoleum of Doge Giovanni Pesaro is one of the most elaborate funerary monuments in Venice. Attributed to the architect Baldassare Longhena, the sculptures are the work of the German sculptor Melchior Berthiel.
Giovanni Pesaro was elected Doge on the first ballot and reigned from 1658-59. The three inscriptions read: Lived 70 years (VIXIT ANNOS LXX), Died in the year 1659 (DEVIXIT ANNO MDCLIX) and Here he lived again in the year 1669 (HIC REVIXIT ANNO MDCLXIX). |
