Ponte degli Scalzi
Map.
The Ponte degli Scalzi is only one of four bridges to span the Grand Canal.
Designed by Eugenio Miozzi, the single-span stone bridge took two years to build and was opened in October, 1934. It is named after the nearby Chiesa degli Scalzi. Miozzi's stone bridge replaced an iron bridge, which had been built in 1858 by the English engineer Alfred Neville to provide access to the city for people arriving in Venice by train. The railway line connecting the city to the mainland had been built a decade or so earlier. |
