The Bell Towers of Venice
The skyline of Venice once bristled with bell towers (campanili), as we can see in an engraving (above) from the second half of the 18th century. There were once more than a hundred bell towers, of which only sixty-six remain standing. In addition to the obvious problem of subsidence, earthquakes, hurricanes, lightning and fires have also taken their toll (no pun intended).
