Chiostro della Santissima Trinita
The Chiostro della Santissima Trinita was designed by Andrea Palladio, but not constructed until 1589, eight years after the architect's death. It is surmounted on all four sides by a terrace.
The cloister, which is also called the Chiostro dei Morti on account of the number of people who are buried here, boasts a magnificent Baroque vera da pozzo (well-head). The monumental well-head was commissioned in 1712 by Father Antonio Pittoni and erected by Giovanni Trognon. It was adorned with sculptures of the Holy Trinity and Saints Peter and Paul by Francesco Penso, also known as Cabianca. Cabianca was also responsible (with Zanutti) for the four angels in the centre of the cloister and the eight Franciscans on the balustrade of the surrounding terrace. |
