The Venetian Lagoon
In the words of the Blue Guide to Venice and the Veneto:
"The hauntingly beautiful Venetian Lagoon is separated from the open sea by the low sandbars of the Lido and Pellestrina, which are pierced by three channels: the Porto di Lido, the Porto di Malamocco and the Porta di Chioggia. A shallow expanse of water, with a an average depth of only about a metre, an an area of 554 square kilometers it is the largest coastal lagoon in the Mediterranean, and the only one in the world which supports a large town in its centre."
