The Museo Correr, which is situated in the Ala Napoleonica and the Procuratie Nuove (west and north sides of the Piazza San Marco), is devoted to both the art and history of Venice.
The core of the collection was bequeathed to the City of Venice, in 1830, by Teodoro Correr, Venetian patrician and passionate collector. Subsequent donations and purchases mean that it now houses an outstanding collection of works of art and artefacts dealing with Venetian history and culture. The Museo Correr also houses the Pinacoteca, which is largely devoted to Venetian paintings from the 14th to the 19th centuries. Perhaps, the most famous painting in the museum is Carpaccio's portrait of Two Venetian Ladies. |
