Corner Chapel
In his will of March 15th, 1378, Federico Corner, established that a chapel should be erected in the church of the Frari in memory of his brother Marco.
The Corner Chapel was begun in 1420 by Stefano Petrizolo and Giovanni di Francesco, two builders from Cremona. The outdoor entrance (now bricked up) to the chapel is surmounted by a beautiful bas-relief of the Virgin and Child and two angels. The relief, which has been dated to the middle of the 15th century, is thought to be the work of a, yet to be identified, Tuscan sculptor. On the altar, there is a triptych of Saint Mark (1474) by Bartolomeo Vivarini, a painter from Murano. The central panel depicts Saint Mark in the act of blessing. He is joined, in the left panel, by Saint John the Baptist and Saint Jerome, and in the right panel by Saint Nicholas and Saint Peter. The pinnacles of the beautifully carved and gilded wooden frame are surmounted by the Virgin Mary and the prophets Jeremiah and Jonah. The holy water stoup was converted into a baptismal font by the addition of a statue (c. 1534-7) of Saint John the Baptist, the work of Jacopo Sansovino, who inscribed his name on the marble. |
