The church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, better known as Santa Maria della Fava, was begun in 1705 by Antonio Gaspari and completed (1750), albeit minus a façade, by Giorgio Massari.
The interior comprises a single nave flanked by side chapels. The statues in the niches of the nave are by Giuseppe Torretti, the master of Canova. The first chapel on the right is home to a beautiful painting of the Education of the Virgin (1732) by Giambattista Tiepolo. Fava means bean in Italian and there are several conflicting accounts of how the church came to be so called. |
