San Giobbe
Map.
The church of San Giobbe was built in the middle of the 15th century. Funded by Doge Cristoforo Moro, in honour of Saint Bernadino of Siena, the church was begun in the Gothic style by Antonio Gambello, but completed in the Renaissance style by Pietro Solari, known as Il Lombardo.
Saint Bernadino, whom we see depicted on the relief above the entrance, had briefly stayed in the adjacent Franciscan monastery. For centuries the church housed the famous altarpiece by Giovanni Bellini, the so-called Pala di San Giobbe, before its removal to the Gallerie dell'Accademia. The church now remains famous for the ceiling of the Cappella Martini, the second side chapel on the left, which is decorated with panels of coloured terracotta. This was almost certainly the work of the Della Robbia family from Florence. The Martini family were silk merchants from Lucca, which probably explains their choice of a Tuscan artist for a type of decoration that was, otherwise, unknown in Venice. |
