The Galleria Giorgio Franchetti is housed in the Ca' d'Oro, which lies on the Grand Canal. The 15th century palace (one of the most beautiful in Venice) was once the property of Baron Giorgio Franchetti, who, in 1915, bequeathed it, together with his large collection of paintings, sculpture and furniture, to the Italian State.
Perhaps, the most famous work of art in the gallery is Mantegna's painting of Saint Sebastian, which hangs in the alcove that Baron Franchetti designed for it. Mantegna painted three versions of Saint Sebastian and this was the final one, completed shortly before his death, in 1506. |
