Murano: Santa Maria degli Angeli
The church and convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli were founded by Giacomina Boncio in 1188. The church was rebuilt between 1498 and 1529.
The interior takes the form of an aisle-less nave. The panels in the wooden ceiling were painted by Pier Maria Pennacchi. The high altar is adorned with a painting of the Annunciation (1537), the work of Giovanni Antonio Sacchiense, better known as il Pordenone. The beautiful bas-relief of the Annunciation, which surmounts the entrance to the courtyard in front of the church, dates back to the 1520s. The nunnery was suppressed in 1810. |
