Sant' Andrea della Zirada
Map.
A church and a monastery dedicated to Saint Andrew were founded in 1329 on a site called 'cao de zirada', hence the name Sant' Andrea della Zirada.
The church, which is really called Sant' Andrea Apostolo, was rebuilt in 1475 and its interior was refurbished again in the 17th century. It was closed on the orders of Napoleon and its monastic buildings were demolished. Sant' Andrea della Zirada, which comprises a single nave with four side altars, retains its beautiful barco (nuns' choir gallery). Also of interest is the sculpture in the chancel, which depicts the Transfiguration of Christ. It is the work of the Baroque Flemish sculptor Josse de Corte (1627-79), who was known in Italy as Giusto Le Court. On the exterior, the portal is surmounted by a fine 14th century Gothic relief of Christ Calling the Apostles Peter and Andrew. The relief of Christ dates back to the late 15th century. |
