San Martino
Although a church dedicated to San Martino (San Martin) has probably stood on this site since the 7th or 8th century, the building we see today was erected between 1553 and 1653.
The church was designed by Jacopo Sansovino and takes the form of a Greek cross with a large central space surrounded, at the corners, by four pairs of chapels. The quadratura is the work of Domenico Bruni, while Jacopo Guarana contributed the painting of Saint Martin in Glory. For centuries San Martino served as the church of the workers at the Arsenale, the so-called Arsenalotti. |
