Casino Venier
Map.
Few spaces better evoke the spirit of life in eighteenth century Venice than the Casino Venier. The casino was the property of Procurator Venier, but was used by his wife, Elena Priuli.
A casino (literally una casa piccola) was a small house in which to meet and entertain friends. It was also used as a venue for gambling, a very popular pastime in 18th century Venice. In 1744 there were 118 casini, almost all of which were situated in the vicinity of Piazza San Marco. |
