Although a church dedicated to the Archangel Raphael has stood on this site since the 7th century, the present building only dates back to 1618-39. Sant'Angelo Raffaele (L'Anzolo Rafael) was designed by Francesco Contino on a Greek-cross plan.
In 1735, while the façade was being constructed the wall collapsed, destroying the church's organ. The ineptitude of the builders led to the construction of a new organ, the doors of which were decorated with five delightful paintings illustrating the Story of Tobias (1750), the work of Gian Antonio Guardi, possibly with the collaboration of his more famous younger brother, Francesco. The sculptural group of Tobias and the Angel, over the entrance to the church, is thought to be the work of Sebastiano Mariani. The fresco in the ceiling of the nave depicts the Archangel Michael overcoming the Devil, the work of Francesco Fontebasso. |
