San Simeone Grande
The 18th century church of San Simeone Grande (San Simeon Grando) is also known as San Simeone Profeta.
It is dedicated to the eponymous prophet, who, as an old man, was assured by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had beheld Christ. On finally taking Jesus in his arms, Simeon declared: Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine secundum verbum tuum in pace (Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word). Luke: 2:29-32. According to the Companion Guide to Venice, the church is 'notable mainly for a recumbent statue of St Simeon...carved in 1317 by the otherwise unknown sculptor, Marco Romano (chapel to left of high altar).' |
