Ponte dell'Accademia
Map.
The Ponte dell' Accademia is one of four bridges to cross the Grand Canal. It is named after the Accademia di Belle Arti, part of which occupies the old Scuola della Carita.
The first bridge to cross the Grand Canal at this point was made of iron and was designed and erected by Alfred Neville. It opened on November 20th 1854 as the Ponte della Carita; it only later came to be called the Ponte dell' Accademia. It was also known locally as the Ponte Inglese. Neville waived the building costs of the bridge for the right to collect tolls. In 1933 Neville's iron bridge was replaced by a wooden structure, the design of Eugenio Miozzi. This was only intended to be a temporary structure, but fifty years later, in the 1980s, Miozzi's bridge was replaced by an identical construction. |
