Palazzo Loredan
In the Campo Santo Stefano stands the Palazzo Loredan, home, since 1891, to the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti (Venetian Institute of Science, Letters and the Arts). The entrance hall hosts the Panteon Veneto, a large collection of marble busts of 'men who had distinguished themselves in politics, arms, navigation, science, humanities and arts who were born or who long lived in the Venetian Provinces'. The Pantheon was begun in 1847 and completed in 1932.
The palace originally belonged to the Loredan family, who bought it from the Mocenigos. The new owners proceeded to rebuild the Gothic building in the Renaissance style and entrusted the work to Antonio Scarpagnino. Evidence of the original Gothic palace survives in the beautiful 15th century marble well-head (vera da pozzo).
