San Giacomo dell'Orio was originally founded in the 11th century, but rebuilt in 1225. The fine wooden ship's-keel ceiling was added in the 14th century.
It is thought that 'dell'Orio' is a corruption of 'del lauro', 'of the bay tree', which, according to tradition, was growing on the site when the church was founded.
The church takes the form of a Latin Cross, with the addition of a second right aisle. All but one of the columns are without bases. The exception, which is dark green in colour and made of verde antico rather than granite, is thought to be part of the plunder brought back to Venice in 1204 after the so-called fourth crusade. The antique column has an equally ancient ionic capital.
The painting on the high altar is by Lorenzo Lotto and depicts the Madonna and Child with Saints (1546). On the wall to the left of the chancel is a statue of the Madonna Annunciata, which may date back to the early 14th century. To the right of the chancel is the Cappella Santissimo with frescoes by Jacopo Guarana.
The campanile dates back to the rebuilding of 1225.
