Palazzo Balbi
Map.
The imposing Palazzo Balbi was built between 1582 and 1590 by Alessandro Vittoria for Nicolo Balbi.
The palace stands on the left bank of the Grand Canal just beyond the junction with the Rio Ca' Foscari, a focal scenic position often depicted in 18th century paintings. The traditional tripartite façade displays two levels of round-arched windows with balconies, rising above a handsome water gate. On December 2nd, 1807, Napoleon watched a regatta, which was being held in his honour, from one of the balconies of the Palazzo Balbi. |
