San Giovanni Crisostomo
Map.
San Giovanni Crisostomo was the last church the architect Mauro Codussi designed and built.
It was begun in 1497 and completed by 1504, the year of his death. In his design, Codussi adopted the Greek-cross plan of a Veneto-Byzantine church. The central dome is supported by free-standing pillars. The church contains two masterpieces of early 16th century Venetian art, Giovanni Bellini's St Jerome with Saints Christopher and Augustine and Sebastiano del Piombo's St John Chrysostomus with Six Saints. In 1977 San Giovanni Crisostomo became host to the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie, a shrine dedicated to a highly-venerated image of the Virgin Mary. The sanctuary is accessed by an ornately decorated side-door. If you look closely to the left of the door, you will see an inscription, which recalls the date, towards the end of the first world war, when the church was hit by an Austrian shell. |
