Mazzorbo: Santa Caterina
Santa Caterina was founded in the 8th century as part of a Benedictine nunnery, but rebuilt in the 13th century.
The church is entered through a brick-paved courtyard, whose walls are lined with fragments of sculpture. Above the entrance to the courtyard is a relief of the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, which is dated 1368. Kneeling in front of Saint Catherine is Elisabetta Dolfin, who was the abbess of the nunnery when the relief was carved. The interior of the church takes the form of an aisle-less nave with a barco. The wooden 'ship's-keel' vault dates back to the 15th century. The bell in the campanile is the oldest (1318) in the entire lagoon. |
