Procuratie Vecchie
The Procuratie Vecchie (Old Procuracies) were built between 1512 and 1532 by Bartolomeo Bon and Guglielmo dei Grigi. The upper story was later designed by Jacopo Sansovino. They procuratie were once the offices and homes of the nine Procurators of St Mark's, the highest officers of state in the Venetian republic after the Doge.
The Procurators were divided into three groups: the Procuratori de supra had jurisdiction over the Basilica and the Piazza, the Procuratori de cifra dealt with the sestieri of San Marco, Castello and Cannaregio. and the Procuratori de ultra dealt with the sestieri of San Polo, Santa Croce and Dorsoduro. |
