San Trovaso
Open: 08.00-11.00/14.30-17.30. Sun: 08.00-11.00.
There is no such saint as San Trovaso; the name is a typical Venetian creation, a combination of San Gervasio and San Protasio.
The original church might date back to the 9th century. It was rebuilt in 1028 when it was one of the largest parish churches in Venice. The present church dates back to the end of the 16th century and is notable for its two similar façades, both in the neo-Palladian style. The architect may be Smeraldi. The interior takes the form of a Latin cross. The broad nave is flanked by chapels. In the chapel to the left of the high altar is one of San Trovaso's star attractions, Michele Giambono's painting of Saint Chrisogonous on horseback (c. 1450), a beautiful example of the International Gothic style. |
